HOW TO PREVENT HAIR LOSS                                The thought of being bald or of hair loss often causes anxiety for both men and women. Hair loss, also known as alopecia, refers to the condition of hair loss from a part of the body and especially the scalp. This is a guide on how to prevent hair loss and reduce the chances of it happening.

What Causes Direct Hair Loss?

Before trying to prevent alopecia, it is important to know what is causing the condition.

The main reason why alopecia occurs is not fully understood and can have many causes and some of them include:

Infection - Alopecia can be caused by diseases such as Folliculitis, Tinea Captiis (fungal infection), secondary syphilis, and the invisible mice known as Demodex folliculorum which eats important hair nutrients and thus causes weight loss.

Drugs - Medical researchers have linked temporary or permanent hair loss to several medications. Medications for heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure have been linked to hair loss. Also, medications that affect the body's hormonal balance often cause alopecia. Medications that affect body balance include steroids, hormone replacement therapy, and acne medications.

Pregnancy - During pregnancy, there is an increase in the circulation of estrogen. This increase in estrogen causes hair to grow back. After giving birth, circulating estrogen returns to its normal levels and this leads to concomitant hair loss. Hair usually grows normally and treatment is not indicated

Genetics - The male pattern alopecia is linked to genetics.

Trauma - Any form of trauma can cause alopecia.

Traumatic events such as childbirth, major surgery, poisoning, and severe depression can lead to hair loss. This condition is known as telogen effluvium. Another form of trauma is hair pulling and curling leading to a type of hair loss known as Trichotillomania.

Radiotherapy is used on the head to treat other types of cancer. This radiation can cause baldness and permanent hair loss.

Aging - As the body loses its ability to replenish itself naturally with aging, it is not uncommon to see alopecia or weight loss as a single individual.

How Is Hair Prevention Prevented?

Alopecia can be prevented in many ways. As mentioned earlier it is important to study the causes listed above for alopecia and use it as a guide to preventing alopecia.

For infections that can cause alopecia, it is important to visit your doctor as soon as the signs and symptoms of such an infection appear. Treatment of diseases as soon as possible will reduce the chances of baldness due to infection.

It is also important to remember the medications used for the treatment of diabetes, high blood pressure, and others. Stick to FDA-approved drugs.

While it is not possible to reverse natural hair loss, you can protect your hair from the harmful effects that can result in loss of hair. Avoid styles that tend to compress the hairline thus leading to alopecia.

Also, to prevent alopecia, it is important to remember shampoos, relaxers, bleachers, and other hair products used. Use hair products intended to restore hair growth.

Not only that, vitamin deficiencies can lead to alopecia, so it is important to eat a healthy diet.
